A Message from the Desk of Melissa Gonville, YWCA Delaware CEO

November 6, 2024

Dear YWCA Delaware Community,

In the wake of the recent election, we find ourselves navigating a range of emotions and reflections on both the progress we’ve made and the challenges that lie ahead. This is a moment for us to reconnect with our mission and recognize that building a truly inclusive, equitable society requires resilience and solidarity, no matter the political climate.

In Delaware, we have witnessed historic breakthroughs, with leaders like Lisa Blunt Rochester, Delaware’s first Black and first female Senator, and Sarah McBride, the first openly transgender person elected to Congress, who are helping to reshape the landscape of our political representation.

On the national stage, Vice President Kamala Harris has helped pave the way, demonstrating the impact of women’s leadership, particularly the transformative strength of women of color. Her role signifies the barriers we continue to break as we work toward a government that reflects the diversity of the people it serves.

We know that progress demands sustained effort. We recognize the continued existence of political and social divides and are aware of the harmful rhetoric that targets marginalized groups across the country. This environment can be emotionally challenging, particularly for those holding intersecting identities. It’s essential that we approach this time with compassion and care, honoring our own and each other’s experiences and emotions.

At YWCA Delaware, we are determined to expand opportunities and drive change to eliminate racism, empower women and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. Each of us plays a significant role in building a society where equity is more than just a vision but a living reality. If you are committed to supporting public policies and practices that improve the lives of women and families, please sign up for our Advocacy Action Alerts. With your continued support, we move forward together, determined to forge an inclusive path for future generations of change agents.

Thank you for standing with us in this work.

Sincerely,

Melissa Gonville
YWCA Delaware, CEO
