Building Wealth, One Home at a Time: Meet June Crockett, YWCA Delaware's Asset Building Program Manager

When June Crockett first joined YWCA Delaware in 2020, she had one goal in mind—helping people take control of their financial futures. Now, as one of two YWCA Delaware HUD-certified counselors, she’s making that mission a reality.

In December 2024, June passed her HUD Housing Counseling exam, furthering YWCA Delaware’s mission of eliminating racism and empowering women, by helping to expand YWCA Delaware’s homeownership education, foreclosure prevention, and rental counseling.

“With Delaware’s homeless population rising agencies in the first state, has never been more important,” said Melissa Gonville, CEO of YWCA Delaware.

June first joined YWCA Delaware as a Workforce Readiness Program Coordinator, leading money management, career development, and entrepreneurship workshops and seminars. In 2024, she stepped up as YWCA Delaware’s Asset Building Program Manager, where she is now helping to develop specific programming for Delaware’s Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed (ALICE) population.

According to the United Way of Delaware, approximately 38% of households in the state either live in poverty or fall under the ALICE population. Many of these hardworking individuals work in a wide range of industries and many hold service jobs.

“Too many people feel defeated,” June shares. “I became a HUD-certified counselor because I want to empower people with knowledge. So many families struggle because they don’t know their options. My job is to be a connector of services, resources and tools to change that.”

June’s passion for economic empowerment started long before YWCA. As a former Relationship Banker at Citizens Bank, June saw firsthand how financial literacy or lack of it could make or break someone’s future. That experience fuels her work today.

“Knowledge and support change lives,” June says. “A lot of people think homeownership is out of reach—but with the right tools, it’s possible.

When she’s not helping families build financial security, June loves spending time with her two adult children, and her dog, Milo and cat named Cookie. “Family is everything to me,” she says. “And that’s why I do what I do—so others can build strong foundations for their own families.”

Over the past five years, YWCA Delaware has helped nearly 3,000 Delawareans improve their credit, land jobs, prepare for homeownership, and avoid foreclosure.

“When you consider the thousands of individuals our organization assists every year, every five years, and across decades, it’s a powerful reminder of how dedicated our staff is, driven by a shared belief in our mission of eliminating racism and empowering women. By helping one person at a time—fixing a budget, securing a home, or guiding someone toward financial stability—our collective impact is immeasurable. It’s hard to imagine what Delaware would look like if YWCA Delaware didn’t exist,” shared Candice Buchanan, YWCA Delaware Chief Programs and Development Officer.
